During the workshop Schöner Ruhen (“rest more beautifully”) a funeral parlour at a more or less contextless setting ought to be designed, with a focus on static, construction detailing and building technology.
The design is based upon the concept of the Urhütte: a traditional wooden construction on stilts. The stilts are an economical and, most importantly, aesthetically appealling means of cicumventing the hillside by raising the whole building towards the sky. The facade is visually structured by vertical window openings that cut through the building envelope all the way to the roof.
The foyer, cloakroom and a spacious dining room are located on the ground floor; the first floor is occupied by two mourning halls − the main one and a smaller, secondary one. They may be used independently from each other and are flooded with light through the long windows.
A light cable structure allows the high rooms in the first floor to be experienced as such. Both mourning halls are heated and ventilated through outlets in the floor to avoid visible pipes and openings. Overall, the reduced and warm design of the rooms tries to make reflection easier and grieving more bearable.
